To provide rigorous instruction in all disciplines to all. The larger goal is to provide educational content of the highest quality at all levels such that its certification will be recommended, and sought after by institutions and organisations.
The features
Consider this scenario. An instructor posts a lecture online (on the application) and a registered student watches it online (or offline) and learns from it. The student discusses it with his (or her) peers on the forum, exchanges notes with them, asks, and answers questions. The student answers an assignment at the end of every lesson. The instructor corrects it and provides comments, suggestions and a grade. The student’s peers may also provide their comments and suggestions, in their allotted space. They learn to review and to judge their peers’ assignments. Students (and for that matter most individuals) generally learn as much from their peers as their instructors, if not more. The students’ skill set are continuously and comprehensively evaluated on multiple metrics. Students whose performance in a course exceeds a threshold are awarded credits on the forum. Students who successfully complete a course, that is, pass the course exams, are awarded a degree. LS will apply the apprenticeship model of doctoral programs in the instruction it imparts to its students. Students who show promise are provided the option of becoming interns at Srikaalika or Abradatas, or both, either during the course, or after. The interns work on real world problems at one or both these companies. Interns may also be provided the option of becoming employees or associates (Associates will receive assignments on a contract basis). Anonymised grades or scores for an assignment, exam or course are displayed on the course notice board. A course in computer science or math involves real world problems such as those which Srikaalika and Abradatas solve on a regular basis. A demonstrated aptitude in solving such problems earns the student a proficiency certification (in addition to the credits mentioned above) and the option of becoming, eventually, an employee at Srikaalika or Abradatas, should the student wish to exercise the option. The assignments are time-bound and students slacking in the assigned work receive gentle (automated) nudges from the LearnStreets website. The coursework culminates in an interview with the course instructor(s) and a satisfactory performance in the interview is a prerequisite for successful completion of the course.
Learn Street will engage personnel from the corporate sector to design the curricula around the industry’s needs. Permission to post lectures is contingent on the instructor and the lectures passing a series of quality control (QC) checks, which may also include a personnel/personal background check.
The course content and the incentives for learning and teaching will be made attractive enough for the Learn Street experience to be worthwhile. Learn Street will host educational content for instructors or organisations who desire to post such content exclusively for their own students. LearnStreets will eventually transition to a university-like role in which it will design curriculum and content with the help of its industry partners, and will offer the same to organisations and corporates for training (or retraining) purposes. A Learn Street graduate will be accorded privileges lifelong. LearnStreets can complement classroom teaching in schools and colleges. It can be a medium for a school or class for posting assignments, and for monitoring and auditing their students’ learning. It can be a solution for understaffed institutes, or for those which seek to provide special courses to students. Learn Street will make provision for economically disadvantaged students. In these various ways, Learn Street will bring together disparate elements in the education sphere and provide a well-rounded learning experience.
